Craig's advice..

"Best fit business insurance at an affordable cost isn't  just about shopping prices.  Our insured's receive a wide variety of increasingly complicated requirements.  Such as additional insured, primary & non contributory, waiver of subrogation, action over (employee injury exclusion, etc., Make sure your agent has a thorough understanding of policy forms and exclusion for this reason."

Overview of common package policies:

BUSINESSOWNERS POLICY (BOP)
A package of property, liability, and business interruption coverage's for small and medium size businesses. A BOP is generally cheaper then if you purchased separate policies.
COMMERCIAL PACKAGE POLICY (CPP)
A commercial lines policy that contains two or more lines of insurance (ie. commercial property, commercial general liability, etc.).

Commercial General Liability

Is the more critical of business insurance needs (including workers compensation for employees) designed to protect against third party insurance claims
The scope of coverage includes:

Coverage A

  • Bodily Injury - Sickness or disease sustained by a person, including death.
  • Property Damage - Physical injury to tangible property, including all resulting loss of use of that property, as well as loss of use of tangible property that is not physically injured.
  • Defense Coverage - The insurer has the right and duty to defend the insured against and "suit" seeking damages because of bodily injury or property damage to which the insurance applies.

Coverage B

Personal and advertising injury comprised of...
  • False arrest, detention, or imprisonment
  • Malicious prosecution
  • The wrongful eviction from, wrongful entry into, or invasion of the right of private occupancy of a room, dwelling, or premises that a person occupies, committed by or on behalf of its owner, landlord, or lessor
  • Oral or written publication of material that slanders or libels a person or organization disparages a person's or organization's goods, products, or services
  • Oral or written publication of material that violates a person's right of privacy
  • The use of another's advertising idea in the named insured's "advertisement"
  • Infringing on another's copyright, trade dress, or slogan in the named insured's
    "advertisement"

Coverage C

Medical Payments
  • Primarily intended to pay for injuries sustained by members of the general public while on the insured's premises or otherwise exposed to the insured's operations.

Professional Liability

Coverage for specialists in various professional fields. Since basic liability policies exclude or don't protect against situations arising out of business or professional pursuits, professional liability insurance is purchased by individuals who hold themselves out to the general public as having expertise in particular areas. Such as lawyers, accountants, insurance agents, physicians, surgeons, dentists, architects, etc.
MALPRACTICE INSURANCE - Most common or the professional insurance coverages, purchased by physicians and hospitals to cover the cost of being sued for malpractice.

Workers Compensation

Insurance that covers medical and rehabilitation costs and lost wages for employees injured at work.
Generally speaking, sole proprietors and partnerships (including LLC members) aren't required to purchase workers compensation unless and until they have employees who aren't owners. Yet both sole proprietors and partnerships can choose to be covered.
If you have employees who aren't owners of the company, you probably need workers compensation. Be warned, NY & NJ will treat an uninsured contractor or subcontractor as your employee if he or she is injured while doing work for your company.

Commercial Property

Coverage for business including commercial buildings, office equipment, inventory, tools, etc. Risks include goods in transit, fire, burglary, theft and more.
IINLAND MARINE PROPERTY COVERAGE
Insurance covers all goods and property that you business transports both on land and water. This can include tools in your truck, goods being delivered, computer equipment being taken home or for repair, etc.

UMBRELLA COVERAGE

Insurance referring to a liability insurance policy that protects the assets and future income of the policyholder above and beyond the standard limits on primary policies.  It is common for contractors working on larger projects to be required to obtain umbrella coverage such as $1 million - $5 million limits and more.
